Does taking menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) hold us back from the transformative process of menopause?
I’m not sure, but what I do know is that adding these reproductive hormones to women during perimenopause drives up the levels at the time our bodies and the natural process is trying to reduce them.
There is a reason these hormones are naturally diminishing in our body and even though we may feel physical discomfort, unless this is causing awful distress, there could be value in feeling what’s going on inside our body,
Of course, that is only one view – the pharmaceutical companies have a totally different view, which is that you must manage the changes in your body by boosting your hormone levels. I’m not saying that this isn’t beneficial for some women, all I’m saying is that there could be another angle that the medical establishment has not even considered.
What if there was a reason for things to be being stirred up inside us?
The changes that occurs for women at this time of life are not just physical: the mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of this process are a big part of the transformation. Although it might feel like you are losing your mind, Imagine, just for a moment, that this was all part of the plan.
After all a caterpillar turns to mush inside its cocoon before emerging: transformed forever. If we gave the caterpillar artificial caterpillar hormones, to save it from the pain of entering the next stage of life. It would never have the chance to retreat to its cocoon and emerge an even bigger/better/more beautiful version of itself.
What would happen if we approached menopause in this way? I don’t think women need to suffer in silence if in terrible pain, however, what if, like the caterpillar, we retreated for a while and contemplate our life – has it turned out how we planned – are we happy with the status quo or are there changes we want to make? Sometimes we are so caught up in the day to day affairs, we don’t give ourselves time to retreat and reconsider other options.
Perhaps it’s worth considering the uncomfortable physical and mental changes that we go through might just be our subconscious trying to get our attention?
